The graphic nature of his realistic scenes led many of them never to be printed or exhibited. Vereshchagin was born in Cherepovets, Novgorod Governorate, in 1842. His father was a landowner of noble birth. At the age of eight he was sent to Tsarskoye Selo to enter the Alexander Cadet Corps, and three years later he entered the Sea Cadet Corps in St. Petersburg, making his first trip in 1858. He served on the frigate Kamchatka, which sailed to Denmark, France and Egypt. Vereshchagin obtained his first diploma from the list at the naval school, but immediately left the service to seriously begin the study of drawing. He won a medal two years later, in 1863, from the Academy of St. Petersburg for his Ulysses slaying the suitors. In 1864, he went to Paris, where he studied under the direction of Jean-Léon Gérôme, although he departed widely from the methods of his master.
