Description: Arthur von Ferraris Museum-quality 3/4 length portrait of a beautiful young bride in her wedding dress, oil on canvas, by world-renowned artist Arthur von Ferraris. This gorgeous portrait was painted in 1927 and is one of the artist’s final works. It is also one of his finest portraits, with an exquisitely balanced composition that is intricately detailed—near-photorealistic—and bursting with life. Signed and dated lower right in red pigment. Art is in exceptional condition as it has been safely protected behind glass. The back of the painting showcases its near-century of aging. The ornate gilded wooden frame, circa 1920s, is a piece of art in itself and is in excellent condition. It was made by luxury Los Angeles frame maker P. J. Bachmann, who was often commissioned to frame museum pieces and exceptional art held in private collections. Frame: 50” h x 42”w and 4” deep Viewable Art: 39” x 31” (Apologies for some of the reflections in the photos due to the glass.) Arthur von Ferraris (1856 - 1928) Arthur von Ferraris was a Hungarian-born artist known for his portraits of society figures of his day and for his "orientalist" paintings, particularly his Cairo, Egypt series which have regularly sold for hundreds of thousands and up to one million dollars at auction. Von Ferraris was born in Galkovitz, Hungary but moved to Vienna as a teenager to study with Joseph Matthaus Aigner. In 1876, at twenty, he moved to Paris to study with Jules Lefebvre, and then with Jean-Léon Gérôme at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1881, just a year after beginning his studies with Gérôme. Like Gérôme's paintings, von Ferraris most acclaimed work is meticulously detailed and almost photographic in its polished realism. Von Ferraris spent time in Egypt in the 1880s and painted street scenes and market scenes that captured the imagination of the art world when he returned to Paris. In the late 1880s he shared a studio with Charles Wilda, a painter also known for his "orientalist" themes. His works from many countries made him known as a "citizen of the world." Von Ferraris had "considerable success" as a society portrait painter. He exhibited these and his Orientalist works at the Salon des Artistes Francais in the 1880s and 1890s. His portraits were painted with that unique sensitivity that characterizes a skilled portraitist, emphasizing the essential qualities of the personality while simultaneously highlighting all the best physical aspects of the sitter. Von Ferraris won honorable mentions at both of the world fairs, the Exposition Universelle, in Paris in 1889 and 1900. From his home base in Vienna, von Ferraris also exhibited in Düsseldorf, Munich and Berlin. He traveled frequently throughout the Middle East, returning to Egypt, but also exploring the lands around the Tigris-Euphrates River Valley and Palestine. Significantly, his reputation as a society portraitist continued to bring steady, financially rewarding work from international clients. He received commissions in all of the European capitols, adding London, Stockholm and Rome to his already extensive client list. He also made several trips to New York City where he achieved a certain social status for having painted the portrait of John Davison Rockefeller, the founder of Standard Oil.
