Description: Antique Yale University "Lux et Veritas" Bronzed Bookends by CS and Co. "Light and Truth" Motto with Hebrew Book Inscription. This is a pair of bookends with the Yale University motto, "Lux et Veritas." First seen in the 1700's, the logo also includes the Hebrew inscription of "Urim ve' Thummin." At that time, this was believed to be a correct translation of the Latin, "Light and Truth." The Hebrew comes from the Rev Ezra Stiles, who was a scholar of the language and who was the 7th president of Yale. The history of the phrase and the seal are not exact but, it is believed to have first been used in 1749. These are cast iron and stand about 6 3/8" tall, weighing about 4 pounds each. There scratches and wear along with what looks like candle wax stains which makes me believe this may have been used in a synagogue for another possible purpose at one time. Review pictures thoroughly and ask questions PRIOR to bidding or purchase. It would look fair with a nice bronze polishing. They are hallmarked on the reverse by CS&Co, for College Seal and Crest.
