Description: Beautiful Sheffield plate entree dish. C. 1820. 5.5 inches height, 11.38 inches width, 11.63 inches depth. English. The finial is a twig and acanthus leaf design surrounded by a circle of gadrooning. The finial on the cover is detachable so the cover may be used as smaller serving dish. The dish has a flat bottom which shows normal wear and the copper shows in five places. The domed cover is embellished with a crest bearing a Cross and a barking terrier. The motto is "Animal -Crux - Anchora" which indicates the ideals of conduct in mind, spirit and courage. Great condition with a very slight dent in the cover. No marks since the sponsors were forbidden to mark their products between 1773 and 1820 to prevent them from passing the plate pieces as silver. No international sales. Simply beautiful.
