Antique RARE Sterling Silver Barbara Frietchie Spoon H.H. Curtis & Co 1890-

Description: Antique Sterling Silver Barbara Frietchie Souvenir Spoon H.H. Curtis & Co 1890-1915 Here we have a very hard to come by antique sterling silver spoon. These are extremely difficult to come across, let alone get your hands on. The ones that I've seen sold sell for high amounts because of how scarce they are. I cannot find any others for sale. Extremely detailed, well done historical American Civil War souvenir spoon. The spoon was made somewhere between 1890-1915. Hallmarked on the back for the company H.H. Curtis & Co. As well as marked "Sterling."Local Civil War heroine, Barbara Fritchie was immortalized by John Greenleaf Whittier in his poem, “The Ballad of Barbara Fritchie,” for defiantly waving her Union flag in the face of oncoming Confederate soldiers. Which is the scene playing out on the spoon. Barbara Fritchie (December 3, 1766 – December 18, 1862) sometimes spelled Frietschie, was a Unionist during the Civil War. She became part of American folklore in part from a popular poem by John Greenleaf Whittier. She became famous as the heroine of the 1863 poem "Barbara Frietchie" by John Greenleaf Whittier in which she pleads with an occupying Confederate general, "Shoot if you must this old gray head, but spare your country's flag." Three months after this alleged incident, Frietchie died. She was buried alongside her husband, who died in 1849, in the German Reformed Cemetery in Frederick, Maryland. Later, in 1914, her remains were moved to Mount Olivet Cemetery and a memorial was erected there in her honor. The Ballad of Barbara Frietchieby John Greenleaf Whittier:Up from the meadows rich with corn,Clear in the cool September morn, The clustered spires of Frederick standGreen-walled by the hills of Maryland. Round about them orchards sweep,Apple and peach tree fruited deep, Fair as the garden of the LordTo the eyes of the famished rebel horde, On that pleasant morn of the early fallWhen Lee marched over the mountain-wall; Over the mountains winding down,Horse and foot, into Frederick town. Forty flags with their silver stars,Forty flags with their crimson bars, Flapped in the morning wind: the sunOf noon looked down, and saw not one. Up rose old Barbara Frietchie then,Bowed with her fourscore years and ten; Bravest of all in Frederick town,She took up the flag the men hauled down; In her attic window the staff she set,To show that one heart was loyal yet, Up the street came the rebel tread,Stonewall Jackson riding ahead. Under his slouched hat left and rightHe glanced; the old flag met his sight. ‘Halt!’ – the dust-brown ranks stood fast.‘Fire!’ – out blazed the rifle-blast. It shivered the window, pane and sash;It rent the banner with seam and gash. Quick, as it fell, from the broken staffDame Barbara snatched the silken scarf. She leaned far out on the window-sill,And shook it forth with a royal will. ‘Shoot, if you must, this old gray head,But spare your country’s flag,’ she said. A shade of sadness, a blush of shame,Over the face of the leader came; The nobler nature within him stirredTo life at that woman’s deed and word; ‘Who touches a hair of yon gray headDies like a dog! March on! he said. All day long through Frederick streetSounded the tread of marching feet: All day long that free flag tostOver the heads of the rebel host. Ever its torn folds rose and fellOn the loyal winds that loved it well; And through the hill-gaps sunset lightShone over it with a warm good-night. Barbara Frietchie’s work is o’er,And the Rebel rides on his raids nor more. Honor to her! and let a tearFall, for her sake, on Stonewalls’ bier. Over Barbara Frietchie’s grave,Flag of Freedom and Union, wave! Peace and order and beauty drawRound they symbol of light and law; And ever the stars above look downOn thy stars below in Frederick town!" In really nice condition, no issues noted. Some patina from time. See photos for most accurate description. The spoon is very hard to come by, and would make a great addition to someone who collects American civil war items/souvenir spoons ect.
