Description: I am pleased to offer this RARE ART FIND! This ORIGINAL 19th century OIL-ON-CANVAS painting measures 24-1/4 inches long X 15-1/4 inches tall on its wooden stretcher frame. It is offered as it was found, nicely mounted in a gilt gold wood frame that measures 27-1/2 inches long X 18-1/4 inches tall (see images). The setting is the PORT of NAPLES, ITALY in the 1800s. A puff of white smoke rises from MT. VESUVIUS in the distance as sailboats ply the still, harbor waters (see images). What is UNIQUE however.., and what dominates the foreground, is the gathering of everyday "Napoletanos" on the seashore. As a weary fisherman approaches with interest, a colorful pair of GYPSY WOMEN collects admissions from a diverse audience that is seated in anticipation, around their impromptu OUTDOOR THEATRE. With a PUNCH & JUDY SHOW about to begin, a black masked Pulcinella puppet languishes on his miniature stage high above the audience, seemingly bored by the adoration of his fans. Inspired by the 16th century Italian Commedia dell arte, this ever popular slap-stick COMEDY PLAY was eventually performed in seaside locales using hand puppets & a small theatre that could be transported easily.Abundant TEXTURED BRUSHWORK is plainly visible within still VIBRANT COLORS, over a tightly stretched canvas (see images). The beauty & expanse of the wide MEDITERRANEAN SEASCAPE is but a backdrop for the artistic skill evident in the dominant panorama of the human activity. Facial expressions, hair and skin tones are captured in near PORTRAIT QUALITY along with realistic depictions of TRADITIONAL ATTIRE, in colorful fabric patterns and prints. Well beyond the technical skill evident in this creation is the artists undeniable mastery in portraying the human activity & interactions of the characters; in this compelling olde world ITALIAN GENRE PAINTING. In a recognizable form of stylized lettering, a signature on the lower left reads: SCOGNAMIGLIO (see images). A thorough comparision of similar circa 1800s Gulf of Napoli paintings; their subjects, artistic styles & signatures, affirms that this artwork is an original painting by the 19th century listed Italian artist: "Edwardo Scognamiglio". A ancient handwritten art dealer's label remains (from a paper backing now gone), that reads as follows: #9-S 24-1/8 X 15-1/8 / The Punch & Judy Show / Naples (see images). With overall crazing in the paint and a few flakes of paint loss, an ancient repair patch is visible on the backside. As would be expected, the taunt canvas is thin and shows its age (see images). Investment quality and ready-to-display! A sturdy florentine wood frame compliments the artwork well. This Antique ORIGINAL Edwardo Scognamiglio O.O.C PAINTING is in overall, GOOD CONDITION!
