Description: Antique French Bronze Bas Relief Medal, “République Française”, Eiffel Tower, Exposition Universelle Paris 1889, Signed Daniel-Dupuis This antique French bronze medal is designed in bas-relief on both sides. It is marked with the word “bronze”, alongside the image of a cornucopia, the hallmark used since 1880 by the Paris mint, “La Monnaie de Paris”, for all bronze medals it strikes. Both sides are signed by Daniel-Dupuis (1849-1899), a renowned French medal designer who studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Daniel-Dupuis created numerous bas-reliefs for the Hôtel de Ville de Paris (City Hall), as well as coins, banknotes and medals for which he received many awards, notably the Prix de Rome in 1872. The medal here, is titled on one side, “La République Française”, and shows a woman in profile crowned with oak and laurel branches and symbolizing the French republic. Daniel-Dupuis was awarded first prize by the city of Paris in 1879 for having created this design. The other side shows a beautiful image commemorating the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889 with the Eiffel Tower in the background. Daniel-Dupuis won a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle de Paris in 1889 for this design. The Musée d’Orsay has several examples of this same medal. This piece is in very good condition with the exception of faint scratches and very tiny dents visible in the photos but hardly perceptible to the naked eye. This exquisitely executed piece will be an excellent addition to you collection or an elegant and charming “French” touch to your décor!
