Traditionally other colors include purples, white, yellows and greens. Famille noire porcelain became popular under the Empress Dowager Cixi and fueled by demand at the time from England and the U.S. The black color in this piece and others made around the same time was achieved by applying a green lead-based enamel over a dry black cobalt layer, resulting in a “glowing” appearance after firing. Measures approx. 10.5" X 8" Very good estate condition. Some staining and glaze imperfections. No nicks, chips or cracks. (See pics)
