Description: George C Frye (1843-1921) was an apothecary in Portland from 1866 to the early 1900s, with a shop on the corner of Franklin and Congress Street in Portland, Maine. He later manufactured surgical supplies and opened a factory. He and his wife Eunice (Nichols) Frye were philanthropists and important citizens in Portland. This cool bottle has a unique shape for a drugstore standing 4” tall and a rectangular 1 ¾” x 1 ¼”. It has a wider mouth and a squatty neck and squared off shoulder. It is nicely embossed “GEO. C. FRYE PORTLAND M E” but what makes it special is the embossed mortar and pestle surrounded by a leafy garland. There is a small “3” embossed on the base. It is in dug condition with some haze and scratching on the backside. There is a tiny lip flake on the front. It is beginning to turn a light amethyst from sun exposure. Overall, it is in very good condition and it needs to go in your collection!
