Description: An original 1787 map of North and South America, taken from Jean Baptiste Louis Clouet's "Geographie Moderne Avec Une Introduction." This is a very interesting and attractive map, showing the legendary land of Teguayo, as well as "Tecas," "Apacheria," and "Pays Inconnu" (Unknown Country). This is before the Louisiana Purchase so the Southeast US is labeled "Louisiane." The map is a superb example of the unexplored, legendary West. According to legend, Teguayo was a land far to the north of Santa Fe, with a great lake and large cities, a dignified and ostentatious king who did not speak to or look at anyone, and of course wealth. The 1765 expedition of Juan Maria Antonio de Rivera to find Teguayo made Rivera the first known white man to enter the state of Utah. A larger map, at about 23" x 16", and very attractive. It is hand-colored and the colors are still nice and vibrant. Good condition as shown. The paper is rag paper and still supple and strong. There is typical tanning and spotting from age around the edges. Old folds down the middle need to be ironed out. Displays really well. Deserves framing. A wonderful piece of history and an awesome addition to any collection. I ship every day the post office is open with your item safely packed the way it deserves to be. I always combine shipping. Please see the Native Americans and the West section and the rest of my store for more museum quality artifacts.
