Description: ADMIRAL COLIGNYand theRise of the Huguenotsby William BlackburnVolume II____________________________Hardcover no dust jacket; 394 pages; Size Approx. 5 1/4 X 7 1/2.Published by Presbyterian Board of Publication; copyright 1869.Details: This is Volume 2 only of a two volume set. (regretfully I do not have the first volume)From the Preface: "This work is something more than a biography: the reader may find it nothing less than a history. "One man occupies the central position. Upon Admiral Coligny almost the entire history hangs. He is a sort of personification of Huguenotism, which, at one time, was in danger of being a Protestant chivalry - a religion in the hands of warriors. Himself a nobleman, he greatly helped to turn it from the path of the whirlwind. Yet the Reform was in need of noble patronage, and he and his brothers represented the young nobility which was led out of moderate Romanism into an earnest Protestantism. They were the first powerful chiefs to adopt the Reform. They set the example to hundreds of others. Coligny is the eminent lay chieftain of the truly religious' Huguenots. He is intimately allied to the Prince of Condé and the political Huguenots. He holds a high place in the state, in the Reformed Church and in the Huguenot army. He links the Protestants to the king and the court. He and the Prince of Orange grasp hands and for a time keep the whole papal forces at bay. Upon him, in a great degree, the St. Bartholomew massacre turns, and he is the first and prominent victim of that awful day. He is, then, the chief historical character of that age in France." A fine addition for your bookshelf!Condition: Corners lightly bumped and worn through, chips from the ends of the spine and several small holes in it (see pictures), the spine is sun-faded, some tilt to the spine, a few minor foxing spots, otherwise in good condition with a solid binding and mostly clean pages. Be assured that we want your experience with Rivendell Antiquarian Books to be enjoyable and problem free. We believe that it is a travesty to simply throw away a used book when there is little or nothing wrong with it - we believe in giving each book the chance of finding a new home. We appreciate the impact a good book can have. We know the excitement of a new page turner, or the familiar joy of an old favorite, and we find satisfaction in putting older, and often scarce books in the hands of people who have the same love for old books that we do.Customer Service:Rivendell Antiquarian Books is committed to ensuring each customer is entirely satisfied with their puchase and our service. If you have any issues or concerns please contact us and we will be more than happy to help. Our books have been inspected carefully by hand by experienced book valuers to ensure the condition description is as accurate as possible for this exact copy pictured. If you have questions about the book before or after purchasing, please feel free to contact us!Packaging:We take pride in packaging our books for safe delivery, and if you check our feedback, you will see this reflected in the comments of many pleased customers. For nearly all of our books, we use a specially designed boxing system from IPS (Inovative Packaging Solutions) located in York, PA. These media shipping boxes are designed to conform to the size of the book, securing it and preventing it from bumping around during shipping. The end result is a box which provides a double thickness of cardboard covering the front and back of the book; actually almost like a box within a box. The outer layer of cardboard extends beyond the ends of the inner "box" which very efficiently protects the corners of the book from being bumped and damaged by the sometimes rough handling packages receive in transit. In addition we place the book in a plastic bag to help guard against moisture if a package is left out in the elements.Delivery:We aim to get all books shipped within 24 hours of order except on weekends. We can't control the delivery time once a book leaves our hands, but most of the time USPS is prompt in delivery, and the expected delivery time given by eBay is usually fairly accurate. Because we use media mail to keep costs down, it does take a little longer for delivery, and occasionally packages get delayed in the mail system. If for some reason your order has not arrived within the expected time frame, please get in contact with us so that we can try to help you.
