Goodenow as a, “Consul General of the United States of America at Constantinople,” and requesting, “His Imperial Majesty, The Sultan of Turkey, His Governors and Officers to permit the said J.H. Goodenow, fully and peaceably to enjoy and exercise the said office.” IMPORTANT CIVIL WAR-DATED DOCUMENT SIGNED BY ABRAHAM LINCOLN AS PRESIDENT AND WILLIAM SEWARD AS SECRETARY OF STATE REQUESTING THE SULTAN OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE TO ACCEPT THE U.S. CONSUL GENERAL TO CONSTANTINOPLE Signed on the very day it was officially announced that President Lincoln (1809-1865) won reelection in the 1864 presidential election and five months before Lincoln’s assassination and Seward’s (1801-1872) attempted assassination. Unfortunately, over a decade later, Sultan Abdulaziz (1830-1876) was deposed by his ministers for having mismanaged the Ottoman economy and also assassinated.
