The design of the 10 Agorot coin was the subject of a short-lived controversy in the late 1980s, when Palestine Liberation Organization chairman Yasser Arafat claimed that the obverse design of this coin incorporates a map of a "Greater Israel" that "goes from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia, from the Red Sea to the Euphrates". This claim was quickly refuted by Israeli politicians and academics, who pointed out that the motif on the 10 Agorot coin - and all other Israeli coins - are selected for historical value only. This design was also adopted as the logo of the Bank of Israel, and appeared previously on the 100 'old' Sheqalim trade coin (KM-143)."
