Description: This is a rare menu (and separate Black Tie etiquette instructions) from the TONY SUPPER BALL which followed the Forty-Second Annual ANTOINETTE PERRY AWARDS ceremony held on June 5th, 1988 at the Minskoff Theatre in New York City. The Tony Supper Ball was held in the Grand Ballroom at the New York Hilton Hotel. The American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards® got their start in 1947 when the Wing established an awards program to celebrate excellence in the theatre. Named for Antoinette Perry, an actress, director, producer, and the dynamic wartime leader of the American Theatre Wing who had passed away the previous year, the Tony Awards made their official debut at a dinner in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Easter Sunday, April 6th, 1947. Vera Allen, Perry's successor as chairwoman of the Wing, presided over an evening that included dining, dancing, and a program of entertainment. Among those honored at the 1987-88 Tony's with acting awards were MICHAEL CRAWFORD (The Phantom of the Opera), JOANNA GLEASON (Into the Woods), BILL McCUTCHEON (Anything Goes), JUDY KAYE (The Phantom of the Opera), RON SILVER (Speed-the-Plow), JOAN ALLEN (Burn This), B. D. WONG (M. Butterfly) and L. SCOTT CALDWELL (Joe Turner's Come and Gone). The award for "Best Musical" went to "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA", "Best Book of a Musical" to JAMES LAPINE (Into the Woods) and "Best Original Score" to STEPHEN SONDHEIM (Into the Woods). "Best Play" went to DAVID HENRY HWANG (M. Butterfly), "Best Choreography" to MICHAEL SMUIN (Anything Goes), "Best Direction of a Musical" to HAROLD PRINCE (The Phantom of the Opera) and "Best Direction of a Play" to JOHN DEXTER (M. Butterfly). The host for the Forty-Second Annual Tony Awards was Angela Lansbury. Performing or presenting awards were Matthew Broderick, Terry Burrell, Nell Carter, Richard Chamberlain, Jim Dale, Loretta Devine, Colleen Dewhurst, Joel Grey, Gregory Hines, Amy Irving, Bill Irwin, Linda Lavin, Patti LuPone, Madonna, John Mahoney, Bill McCutcheon, Howard McGillin, Donna McKechnie, Mandy Patinkin, Bernadette Peters, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lee Remick, Chita Rivera, Jason Robards, Lily Tomlin and Kathleen Turner. DETAILS: The Tony Supper Ball menu measures 6 1/4" X 4" inches, is printed on a textured stock and opens to reveal details for the Taittinger Champagne Reception and the menu for the Black Tie event on the inside. The separate note measures 5" X 3" inches and has a blank backside. CONDITION: With the exception of a few drops of champagne spilled on the inside of the menu, this rare set is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any theatre aficionado or historian. These items will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard for safe transport.
