Description: Opuntia Cochenillifera Variegata Cactus, have a similar growth pattern as the non-variegated variety and a wonderfully marbled pattern that contain shades of green. This variety is also edible, easy to grow, fast growing, and makes an outstanding and beautiful cacti whether used for landscaping or as a patio plant. This cactus is a real show plant that adds a wonderful accent to any desert garden or patio and will be sure to spark conversation. Container grown Opuntia Cochenillifera Variegata will add that rich desert feeling to your porch or patio. In the ground it can reach it’s full potential in just a season or two. Like many of the cacti, they thrive on neglect and can survive either in the ground or container kept. Full to partial sun will allow your cactus to thrive. If you intend to grow in a container be sure to use a well draining sandy cactus mix, water when the soil is dry, fertilize sparingly, and keep your cactus away from frost. Bring your cactus indoors during the winter. As long as it can receive some direct sunlight it will be fine until spring. Cactus can grow well in containers but be sure to allow enough room for your plant to grow. The more room the roots have to expand, the greater it's growth potential. Generally, a 10 to 20 inch diameter container that is at least 10 inches deep is a good starting container that will keep your cactus happy. Mature plants will grow from 3 to 4 feet tall and typically up to 20 inches wide. If at any point you notice that your cactus has stopped growing it may mean that the roots have become root bound which means there is no longer any room for your cactus to expand so that it can continue to grow taller. At this point you may need to transplant your cactus into a larger container. Be sure to bring your cactus indoors during the winter months and place it somewhere it can continue to receive direct sunlight. One of the picures in this listing is the non-variegated variety. For those who would like more information about Opuntia in general, see my offer for 5 fresh (non-variegated) cactus pads which are easily rooted should you wish to root your own. Cactus is an excellent super food for humans, tortoises, turtles, iguanas, and other reptiles. Nopales have been touted as the next kale in health food circles. It is a very popular Mexican food source that has been enjoyed for hundreds of years. It is delicious pickled, grilled, (see photo) and can be served with nachos, raw in salads or fried in omelettes.
