Description: Pair of cabinet photos circa 1870's-1880's (probably 1875-1882). One photo shows a soldier with double stripes on his uniform sitting on an adjustable wire stool. The other shows the same soldier sitting on a chair next to a man holding a mandolin. Two other men stand behind the soldier & the man with the mandolin. The card with the individual soldier has some age soiling to the edges of the matte & some edge & corner wear including small surface scuffs at three corners. The white background of the photo has a tiny slightly raised 3/16 inch area which was bumped in a trifle from the back. This only shows when the card is held at an angle in the light. The actual photo has good contrast & has excellent gloss. The back has some age soiling & a few small brown spots. The card measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 1/4 inches. The card showing the four men has some age soiling & light staining to the mat. Three of the corners of the matte are creased. The matte has edge wear & other minor flaws. The top left corner of the photo has a small spot of some unknown substance that is rough to the touch. The image has rich tones & excellent contrasts as well as a glossy surface. The back of the matte has minor soiling & a small stain at the top left corner. The card measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 1/4 inches. These two photos DO NOT have any photographer's marking so we do not know where the photos were taken or who the photographer was. But, it is interesting to note that the photos turned up a number of years ago in an album which was comprised mostly of photos which had the photographer's mark of Smith & Cooper of Washington, Kansas. However, the two photos we are offering are not marked. But, perhaps that background is a starting point for more research. In any event, an interesting pair of photos regardless of where they were taken. The condition can be seen in the accompanying photo. The reference number for this listing is #5119.
