Today it is widely seen— even by those whose first preference may be for a different musical form — as animportant and valued element of our national culture.Musicians who once made their living playing shows by the light of kerosene lampsat remote mountain schoolhouses have found themselves featured at New York’s Car-negie Hall, or in Hollywood, or on triumphal overseas tours There is no longer any-thing remarkable about music of this kind being performed on national television, orat Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center, or even at the White House. Many of the musicians responsible for the increasingly broad based appreciationof bluegrass and traditional country music grew up within a hundred miles or so of EastTennessee’s Tri Cities (Bristol, Kingsport, and Johnson City). Some of the best knowninclude Chet Atkins, the A. P. Carter Family, Doyle Lawson, Earl Scruggs, Don Renoand Red Smiley, Roy Acuff, Ralph and Carter Stanley, the Osborne Brothers, JimmyMartin, Jim and Jesse McReynolds, Doc Watson, Ricky Skaggs and Dolly Parton. Thereare, however, many more who have played important roles. The creative energy that has inspired so much wonderful music is still here. Yearby year young dedicated musicians emerge who are both sensitive to their musical birth-right and also gifted enough to add something of their own. Some of these have beenmembers of the East Tennessee State University Bluegrass Band. The band began when the chairman of ETSU’s music department, Dr. RichardCompton, implemented a series of courses relating to the area’s musical heritage. ‘ Sincethen, dozens of undergraduates and faculty members have participated, performing onconcert stages, television, radio, clubs and festivals throughout the regionSome former members have gone into music full-time. Jennifer McCarter, for ex-ample, moved to Nashville with her twin sisters, signed a contract with Warner BrothersRecords and was introduced to network television audiences as a featured performeron the Dolly Parton Show. Others, like Glen Rose and Bill Dunham, who are heardon this album, pursue careers in other fields but still find time to perform. It would be impossible for a single album to do justice to the talents of all whohave played with the ETSU Bluegrass Band. Presented here, then, is a lively musicalcelebration by nine current and former players, Three, Tim Stafford, Richard Blausteinand myself, are faculty members. The rest are East Tennessee State University students. The songs on this album are surprisingly varied. Some are earthy, some spiritual.Their sound ranges from traditional to modem; several offer a refreshingly good-humoredoutlook on the trials of life. The instrumental pieces range from old-style dance tunes to imaginative showpiecesfeaturing some brilliant virtuoso playing. And, remarkably, nine of the eleven selectionsare compositions of the ETSU Bluegrass Band members themselves.Happy listening,Jack Tottle Thank you for your business. Gallimoresgoods
