THE STORY: The 1980 National Convention of the Republican Party of the United States convened at just built Joe Louis Arena (opened December 1979) in Detroit, Michigan, from July 14 to July 17, 1980. The Republican National Convention nominated retired Hollywood actor and former Governor Ronald W. Reagan of California for President and former Representative George H. W. Bush of Texas for vice president. Reagan, running on the theme "Let's Make America Great Again," stayed at the Detroit Plaza Hotel in the Renaissance Center, at the time the world's tallest hotel, and delivered his acceptance speech at Joe Louis Arena. It remains the only major party national political convention to have been held in Detroit. Reagan campaigned in Michigan in October with some of the glitterati of the Detroit convention that skyrocketed him into his late summer lead. At his side were his onetime adversary and current running mate, Bush; his onetime adversary and almost running mate, former President Ford; and Michigan's popular, moderate Republican governor, William G. Milliken. They held an October 16th rally in the Detroit suburb of Birmingham; Reagan won endorsements from two black civil rights leaders and then in an effort to convince the large number of undecided voters in Michigan's affluent and heavily Republican Oakland County that he should be President. A rally was also held in Flint on October 15, 1980, attended by many dignitaries and UAW and Teamster Representatives as well. Ronald Reagan sported a "Teamsters Jacket" while addressing the rally at Flint Southwestern High School. Reagan told the crowd he came to Flint "to hold the Carter administration flatly responsible for the dismal state of the economy." Flint, at the time, had a 20% percent unemployment rate! Michigan presented President Reagan with 21 electoral votes, with the popular vote totaling 1,915,225 or 48.99%. Jimmy Carter – Democratic, John Anderson – Independent, and Ed Clark – Libertarian split up the balance of the popular vote! Photograph, not RPPC. Original, not reproduction. No known negative!
