Description: 1976 THE BIG BOOK OF REAL TRAINS by Elizabeth Cameron Illustrated by G. Zaffo Is your kid into trains? This is a super cool train book with outstanding pictures and just the right amount of text to keep them engaged. Originally published by Grosset and Dunlap in 1949, this 1976 printing is its fourth. This copy was a former library book - it has a seal on the lower left hand corner that says, "Grosset & Dunlap Guaranteed Library Binding", which I had to look up. "The Libray binding is the best available binding and has been specially reinforced to last longer. It is intended for high-volume library use and is made to withstand the rigors of repeated checkouts." I didn't know this about these types of covers, but it is surely true with this copy. Even after 48 years, it still has a durable cover, with a locomotive and the text printed onto it in lieu of a dust cover. However, this is a damaged copy - the back has about an inch and a quarter sized scratch, it's also a bit dirty on the back. When opening the book, you see on the title page that it has been stamped "Discard". There is a red sticker on the inside left cover which reads, "Please wash your hands before you read me and keep me clean." There is also about a three inch tear on the colored title page, a few pages in, that is torn at the bottom along the spine. Still and all, this is a fabulous book - you and your kid get to learn about every type of train car, from Locomotives and Tenders, to Super Flat Cars, to Double Door Box Cars, all the way to the Caboose. And then you get to read about the parts of a locomotive on its picture, train signals - with whistles and lanterns - and the various positions on a train, as in who does what. The book weighs 15.4 oz prior to shipping - comes to you in a bubble mailer via USPS Media Mail. Thanks for the looky-loo!
