Description: We are offering the Dartmouth Natal Day booklet for the 202nd Commemoration of the founding of the town of Dartmouth [Nova, Scotia] in 1750, held on August 6, 1952. Includes an Official Program of Sporting Events, Sport Stories and Historical Information. The book was produced by the Kiwanis Club of Dartmouth. (5 3/4" x 8 3/4"; 74 pages) With messages from the Mayor of Dartmouth and Mayor of Halifax. It also has many interesting advertisements for products and services of that time. The book gives information on the pioneer Dartmouth settlers who arrived at Halifax Harbor in 1750 on the ship "Alderney", many of whom died in the following year by Indian attacks during what came to be known as the Dartmouth massacre. The history is given of the first "Natal Day" commemoration, held in 1895, which was also to celebrate the construction of a railway from Windsor Junction to Dartmouth. The book gives the program for the 1952 Regatta, listing the canoeing categories and names of the participants, Swimming & Diving competitions, Water Skiing Exhibitions, Helicopter Air Show, etc. Two pages are devoted to the sights to be seen from Silver's Hill, from which can be seen the oldest used water-routes in the province on which Indians paddled down the chain of lakes from Shubenacadie to the harbor long before and after the settlement of Halifax, and also the historic homes owned by wealthy settlers. One page, titled "Progressive Dartmouth" is devoted to the growth boom of the town after WWII - suburban home construction, and small business growth on Portland St. An article titled "Babes in the Woods" describes the tragedy of Jane and Margaret Meagher, two little girls who got lost in the woods in 1842, had perished and were found a week later - "crowds of Indians, sailors, soldiers and civilians from Halifax and Dartmouth traveled to and from the area every day in their efforts to find the little ones". **NOTE** - In the "book world", this book would be known as an "error book" as it has some errors or irregularities (which very often occurred in the first printing of a book) and then after inspection of the book, the errors would be corrected for subsequent printings. An error book is often of interest to people as an oddity and for its uniqueness. We have not seen any other copies of this 1952 Natal Day book, so we don't know if all of them had the same errors or only this particular copy. HERE ARE THE "ERRORS" IN THE BOOK - the cut of the front cover is slightly off (known as a miscut); in an ad for the Regal Restaurant & Fountain, the name and location of the restaurant was printed upside down, while the rest of the page which is about the Regatta is printed right side up; and an article titled "North End Expansion" begins on a certain page, but then is continued on a page that is three pages before the beginning of the article.
