Description: You are bidding on a rare antique hardcover book titled Oriental and Western Siberia: A Narrative of Seven Years' Explorations and Adventures in Siberia, Mongolia, The Kirghis Steppes, Chinese Tartary, And Part of Central Asia. By Thomas Witlam Atkinson. With Numerous Illustrations. Published by J. W. Bradley, 1859. Atkinson undertook this exploratory mission to sketch portions of Siberia and Asia previously unknown. He traveled, with a special passport from Czar Nicholas I, out of Russia's Asiatic dominions from Kokhan on the west to the eastern end of the Baikal and as far south as the Chinese town of Tchin-si. His journey also led him to the Syan-shan mountain range, reportedly never before seen by any European, as well as great portions of the western region of the Gobi Desert. Atkinson produced sketches for this volume. Atkinson, a British explorer, scientist, and artist, offers observations on the mines, resources, travel and weather conditions, the Altai mountain range, etc. Along the way he took numerous risks, experienced nervous encounters with tribesmen in Central Asia, and suffered much from hunger and thirst.
