With notes corrective and explanatory by Peter Cunningham, a British writer known for his biographical works and in particular an edition of the letters of Horace Walpole. First published in between 1779 and 1781, Johnson's Lives, as it is often known, comprises short biographies and critical observations of 52 poets. Of these, six have been singled out as the most important, being those of John Milton, John Dryden, Alexander Pope, Joseph Addison, Jonathan Swift and Thomas Gray. The work as a whole is an important touchstone in literary biography and literary criticism, and an example of Samuel Johnson's lasting contribution to English literature. CONDITION In half morocco binding with marbled boards and gilt detailing to the spine. Externally, in excellent condition with just some shelfwear to the spine. Sotheran booksellers label to the verso of the front free endpaper of volume I. Front hinge to volume I slightly strained after endpaper but still reasonably firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright with the occasional scattered spot and heavier spotting to first and last few pages.
