Shunk (1788-1848) was an American politician from Pennsylvania. Shunk was originally a teacher from a poor background, but rose through politics after his service in the Pennsylvania militia during the War of 1812. After serving as the clerk of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, Shunk married the daughter of then-governor William Findlay. In 1844, Shunk won the governor's sear himself as a Democrat. He resigned in 1848 due to failing health and passed away 11 days later. This pamphlet is a oration from Rev. William DeWitt of the Presbyterian Church of Harrisburg speaking about the life and character of Shunk. Typical of eulogies, this speech speaks to the hard work and effort of an individual like Shunk and pays homage to him well. This is great piece of Harrisburg or Pennsylvania history.
