Travelling extensively, Wraxall made the acquaintance of numerous notable figures in Europe, including Frederik Ludvig Ernst Bülow and Ernst Schimmelmann. Wraxall's first memoirs appeared in 1815, and he was imprisoned in 1816. Wraxall believed that his memoirs we in part to blame for his incarceration, resulting in his decision to publishing his remaining memoirs posthumously.
