1834 paper: ADJUTANT STORK, or Crane; ancient BALBEC; draft horses

Description: THE PENNY MAGAZINE February 1, 1834 Adjutant Crane Balbec This is a paper which is 190 years old. It is printed in a small format, measuring 7 by 11 in size, and is 8 pages long. The issue came from a bound volume and has typical minor disbinding marks at the spine, plus a slight bit of age browning (see photos), but is otherwise in excellent condition. The issue leads off with a front page article on VORACITY OF THE ADJUTANT, including a 3 x 4-inch wood engraving of this bird, the Adjutant Stork, or crane, confronting a snake. It is accompanied by a text of over 90 lines, which says in part: One of the most voracious of carnivorous birds is the gigantic Crane, or, as it is called in India, the Adjutant. . . they are denominated Bone-eaters . . . . Its courage is not equal to its voracity, for a child of eight or ten years old soon puts it to flight with a switch, though at first it seems to stand on its defence, by threatening, with its enormous bill widely extended, and roaring with a loud voice like a bear or a tiger. It is an enemy to small quadrupeds . . . Every thing is swallowed whole; and so accomodating is its throat, that not only an animal as big as a cat is gulped down. . . * * * * * * * * * * * * * The center of the issue has over two pages on the ancient city of BALBEC. It is illustrated with a pair of wood engravings, showing "Ruins of the City of Balbec" and "Circular Temple of Balbec." Among the unillustrated articles in the paper are ones on: THE "PLACE OF FIRE" AND NAPHTHA SPRINGS OF SHIRWAN (approx. 175 lines) ENGLISH MANAGEMENT OF DRAUGHT HORSES. (approx. 75 lines on draft horses) PROFESSIONS AND TRADES OF THE METROPOLIS. (over a full page on employment in London, with a table giving occupational figures for the city. E.g.--83 Gun and Pistol Makers; 940 Cheesemongers; 163 Poulterers, etc.) CASPAR HAUSER. (more than a full page on the first half of a report on a mysterious teenage boy who was found wandering in Bavaria in 1828, apparently intelligent, but possessing only a strange language, and totally unfamiliar with regular society.) ****************** Background on this publication: The Penny Magazine was a weekly 8-page paper put out by Londons Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Throughout the 1830s, an American edition was very popular in the United States, only to dwindle into extinction during the following decade. The paper did not cover the current news of the day, and carried no advertising. Instead, the Penny Magazine provided excellent essays on a wide array of subjects, such as architecture, science, geography and natural history. The paper was compact in size, and every issue was illustrated with several fine woodcut engravings. 118 [gsp10206] _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
