Description: This Aylesbury (Buckinghamshire) bronze Anti-Slavery Conder halfpenny token, dated 1796 (Dalton & Hamer Buckinghamshire No. 7; Atkins 18; 30 mm.) has very good eye appeal with a good strike and surfaces. As in most examples, the centers of both the obverse and the reverse are weakly struck, but the legends on both the obverse and reverse are strong. Obverse: Bust of King William III to right with a laureate wreath, die-sinker’s name: “JAMES” below, with legend: “TO THE FRIENDS FOR THE ABOLITION OF SLAVERY *”. Reverse: Irradiated cap of liberty on a staff and four draped flags with legend: “* * * AYLESBURY * TOKEN * * * * 1796”. Diagonally milled edge //////. This token was issued to honor the Friends for the Abolition of Slavery, one of the Quaker abolitionist societies in England, whose efforts culminated in the abolition of the slave trade in 1807 and the abolition of slavery in 1833 throughout the British Empire.
